Jan Sebastian Bach, wściekły z powodu pomysłu wysłania jego „Wariacji
Goldbergowskich” w kosmos*, postanawia pozbawić ludzkość swojej spuścizny i
podarować ją tym, którzy słuchać jej będą w kosmosie. Po raz ostatni aranżuje
koncert zmarłego – po wykonaniu „Wariacji”– Glenna Goulda, wydobywając go przy pomocy
jego własnego nagrania z fortepianu (pod postacią nadmarionety), po czym
przedstawia własny muzyczny testament.
* W 1977 roku astronauci z NASA wysłali w kosmos Arię z „Wariacji
Goldbergowskich” jako wizytówkę homo sapiens na wypadek, gdyby żyli tam
Marsjanie.
When the recordings of Goldberg
Variations had been sent to space to represent humankind, Johann
Sebastian Bach got furious*. He decided to deprive the humankind of his musical
heritage and give it to the creatures in space. He resurrects Glenn Gould – who
died following a performance of the Variations – by means of
his own recording. And so, Gould’s overhanging marionette leaves the grand
piano to present his musical testament to the world.
* In 1977, NASA sent a part of Goldberg
Variations on records containing sounds and images describing the life
and culture of Earth, which were intended for intelligent life forms.
